חדשנות עממית הינה פעילויות לשפור מוצרים, טכניקות ותוצרים באופן מקרי ונרחב על ידי אנשים עממיים שהבינו את הטכנולוגיות הדרושות והכישורים לכך
חדשנות עממית בעולם המערבי היא תופעה חדשה יחסית. כדיסציפלינה אקדמית, זהו תחום החוקר את צמיחתם של פרויקטים ברי-קיימא והטמעתם בחברה האזרחית. הדגש בחקר התופעה הזו הינו על שילוב בין הספרות המקצועית אודות חדשנות ובין המחקר על הרשתות האזרחיות העממיות, זאת במטרה להבין כיצד קבוצות חברתיות אזרחיות מפתחות דרכים חדשות לחיות עם השפעה פחותה יותר על הסביבה.
